You may recognize this bi-racial beauty as the woman who launched a thousand magazine covers when it was revealed she's dating British royalty Prince Harry, but Meghan Markle is more than somone's arm candy. The black and white actress plays a paralegal on the USA tv show Suits, is a fashion designer with Canadian retailer Reitman, and just returned from a December trip in India working with adolescent girls between the ages of 12-14. She just made headlines for her recent essay in Time magazine regarding Period shaming and how this directly affects young girls and their education.
In addition to being an avid humanitarian and actress Markle has embraced her bi-racial identity- even being so bold to come out about the struggles of being a multiracial actress in a intellectual essay Elle UK back in December. Even as she is scrutinized in the media for her relationship with royalty, Markle has stayed devoted to her career, culture, and efforts to use her platform to discuss taboo subjects in Hollywood.
Here are some of my favorite quotes:
"Being biracial paints a blurred line that is equal parts staggering and illuminating."
"Being 'ethnically ambiguous', as I was pegged in the industry, meant I could audition for virtually any role. Morphing from Latina when I was dressed in red, to African American when in mustard yellow..."
"Make a choice: continue living your life feeling muddled in this abyss of self-misunderstanding, or you find your identity independent of it. You push for colour-blind casting, you draw your own box. You introduce yourself as who you are, not what colour your parents happen to be."
